Odds on Romania to win Euro 2024

What are the odds for Romania to make the Euro 2024 quarter-finals?

The European Championships are just around the corner and Romania will be hoping to fight their way through the knockouts. But what are the odds for Romania to make the quarter-finals of Euro 2024?

Romania are one of the most historic teams when it comes to international football, having taken part in the inaugural World Cup all the way back in 1930. Belgium, France and Yugoslavia are the only other European teams who took part alongside Romania.

Since then, they have qualified for a total of seven World Cups but have not appeared at the tournament since 1998. The most famous moment in Romanian World Cup history came in 1994 when the legendary Gheorghe Hagi masterminded a 3-2 win over Argentina to make the quarter-finals. That is still their best finish to date.

In the European Championships, Romania are no strangers to a quarter-final, having made the final eight four times in 1960, 1972, 1984 and 2000. However, the latter has to go down as their most impressive European performance, having qualified from a group containing England, Germany and Portugal. It was only the eventual champions, Italy, who were able to knock Romania out of Euro 2000.

What are the chances for Romania to win Euro 2024?

Romania have been placed into Group E for the European Championships in Germany this summer, alongside Slovakia, Ukraine, and Belgium. While Belgium, who are ranked third in the world, will certainly be favourites to top the group table, second place seems very much up for grabs. Ukraine are the next highest-ranked side at 22nd in the world, with Romania in 46th and Slovakia in 48th. Although Ukraine are favourites on paper to come second in Group E, Romania will have a chance to cause an upset. Three third-place finishers will also qualify for the knockout stages of Euro 2024, so Romania could boost their chances by getting a good win over Slovakia.

Although Romania lost their last match 3-2 against Colombia, they were on an impressive 12-game unbeaten run before that. This run included wins over Moldova, Andorra, Belarus, Kosovo, Israel, and Switzerland. The Romanians are going to need that kind of consistent resilience if they have any hope of beating the likes of Ukraine and Slovakia to a spot in the Euro 2024 knockouts.

Unfortunately for Romania, one of their highest-profile players isn’t currently playing regular football at club level. When Radu Dragusin swapped Genoa for Tottenham Hotspur in January, he would have had aims of breaking his way past Cristian Romero and Micky Van de Ven into the starting XI, but that hasn’t quite happened yet for the central defender. Romania also have Razvan Marin from Empoli, Ionut Nedeicearu from Palermo, and Parma duo Dennis Man and Valentin Mihaila. Most of the Romanian squad play their club football outside the top five European leagues.

Romania currently have odds of 1.60 to qualify from Group E, 5.50 to make the quarter-finals, 17.00 to reach the semi-finals and 200.00 to go all the way and win Euro 2024 outright.
